Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality were expected to boom in 2016. With a variety of new AR and VR games and devices hitting the market this year, more people were using this new technology this year than ever before. AR became reachable to all ages when Pokémon Go hit the app store this summer. This record-breaking app has been downloaded over 100 million times and had more than 20 million active users daily. Over the course of the next 5 years, the number of AR users is expected to grow by 35% with expected revenue to reach $100 billion by 2020. It is also expected that by this time approximately 500 million VR and AR headsets will have sold. Right now, there are over 1,000 companies that are within the Augmented Reality market, one of the most well-known being Magic Leap. AR startup, Magic Leap, is currently valued at $4.5 billion with a list of notable investors that include Google, Alibaba, Warner Brothers, and more. Next year, sales of Augmented Reality smart glasses are anticipated to reach $1.2 billion. With the success that AR has seen so far in 2016, 2017 is sure to build on this and introduce new AR games and devices to the market.
